Artist Statement

Processed food has given us convenience; but also negative effects such as debilitating decay within our body. The chemicals in our packaging, food, and our environment is the cause of serious health problems including but not limited to cancer, diabetes, and digestive issues. The chemicals I use in my work can also cause negative effects in our body, although they are deemed “safe”. I demonstrate the many layers and the depth of damage left by various diseases using processed food packaging in part with other mixed media. Inspired by the paper sculpture work of Abhidnya Ghuge; I create my own processed paper to form my sculptures. My work is also informed by sculptors David Altmejd and Stephen De Staebler who show visible destructive and decaying conditions of the human body in their own work. Kelsey Irvin is an artist who inspires me to use collage and paint together to show the depth of the decay left by disease.
